-Hygiene Kits-
In our work in
the favelas we
see a severe
lack of proper hygiene
among many of
the poor. The
poorer the
neighborhood,
the worse it
gets. Running
water is
available in
some of the
favelas while
others must rely
on the city to
send trucks
weekly with
enough water for
their bathing,
cooking,
cleaning and
drinking. Lack
of health
education is to
blame for some
preventable
problems such as
skin rashes,
diseases, and
rotting teeth.
When mission
teams come they
often ask what
they can bring
to help in the
ministry work.
Hygiene kits are
something we
almost always
ask for.
A simple Ziploc
bag filled with
toothp aste,
toothbrush,
washcloth,
razor, comb,
soap, shampoo,
etc is almost
like a Christmas
present! These
personal items
are expensive
and bought
sparingly.
Families that
have many
children are
very grateful to
receive these
kits and they
make for great
doors openers as
we strive to
build
relationships in
their
neighborhoods.
On one of our
visits to a new
favela we
distributed some
hygiene kits to
children as we
were making our
way through the
maze of wooden
huts. Upon
entering one
home there we
were pleasantly
surprised to see
two little girls
furiously
brushing their
teeth with the
new toothbrushes
they had just
received!
If you or your
group would be
interested in
providing some
of these kits
the supplies can
be gathered and
sent with a team
scheduled to
come this way
or, funds could
be sent and the
supplies
purchased here.
